YOUR SKIN: Hyperpigmentation? A thing of the past

Dr. Oz on: Recharging your Skin with Glycolic & Lactic Acid: March 31, 2011
Earlier this week we posted a note on Facebook about the benefits of a skin care regimen that consists of using L-lactic acid and glycolic acid. Though I’ve been touting the benefit of these important AHAs for more than two decades, I was reminded of how this seemingly simple concept has yet to take root in the mainstream world when Dr. Oz brought the issue to forefront on a recent show.
On his show, “Recharge Your Body from the Inside Out,” he talked about the benefits of using a milk compress after cleansing followed by a moisturizer with glycolic acid to restore pH balance, induce cell turnover and hydrate. Though it’s not a new concept, I’m glad that he had the platform to get this message to the masses. Remember the milk acids were used by Cleopatra and are considered an ancient tradition for beauty.
AssessmentSidebar2 Why does this combination make a difference? The lactic acid, an alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA), not only provides rich hydration and softens the skin, but also exfoliates without provoking irritation. It also treats pigmentation discolorations and reduces wrinkles. Glycolic, also an AHA, removes dead cells, smoothes skin texture and reduces the signs of wrinkles. Since it is a smaller molecule it is able to penetrate cellular walls and actively stimulate collagen production and cell turnover. The combination of the two will lift away dead cells and promote the growth of new ones – without being too harsh – as well as restore hydration and pH balance.
Here’s a nice regimen I recommend for healthy, hydrated and glowing skin: cleanse with a lactic acid such as the Gentle Milk Cleanser (pure milk extracts)

084_GentleMilkCleanser_recropped080_PumpkinCleanser_cropped Skin smoothing gel

Cleanser, Or Pumkin Cleanser
(a lactic acid base) followed by glycolic acid therapy support such as the Skin Smoothing Gel to correct and smooth photo-damaged skin and Moisture Au Lait (milk moisturizer) to give skin a soothing nourishing finish.
This natural, all-purpose daily cleanser removes surface residue and protects against free radical damage. Pumpkin has a high content of vitamin A and beta carotene, two potent antioxidant ingredients; combined with natural surface-reducing lipids and essential oils, Pumpkin Cleanser provides important nutrition for the skin. With a wonderfully appealing scent and gentle enough for ultra sensitive skin, Pumpkin Cleanser cleanses deeply for normal to oily skin types. If pumpkin is drying for some skins, recommend mixing with Gentle Milk Cleanser for a creamy, luscious cleanse.

Clearing up sun damaged skin, acne and hyperpigmentation takes a little time, lot's of "home work"(consistant and appropriate skin care regimen) The results will amaze you. In a short period time, you can definitely see improvements. Enought to make you want to continue.

Make me look like someone else.

I was honored to be part of Amelia's wedding doing the makeup for her and her bridal party. That time, the look she wanted was more natural, preety and bridal. Very appropriate for this wonderful school teacher and educator as it suits her style,  nurturing, caring, fun and loving personality. But on Friday this past week, we took her to another level.  It's DIVA TIME LADY!

Amelia has this beautiful face with high cheek bones, great skin. I just love her face. I have been treating it all these years. She comes to me for facials, peels, you name it she gets it!  So I know her face very well.  I always wanted to do something a little bit more exotic on her.  Although I knew she would not request this look (it's not her) I wanted to treat her to it and show her other options.  After we were done, she reevaluated the way she saw herself.  She is now a bit more free with her style.

We spent an afternoon at my studio, hair makeup and styling and shot a few photos.  This is Amelia, lovely, natural, beaufitul skin, transformed into a more glamorous Amelia. After the shoot, we all went out to our local and favorite Chinese restaurant and toasted to her new look!  Still not her, but a more glamorous Amelia. Her husband approved! oh yes he did.

Skin Care from the Kitchen

Kitchen cures for the skin

Skin Care from the kitchen

In my quest to know everything I can about healthy, young and beautiful looking skin, I came across this article in one of the  professional trade publications. Foods I have been using for many years prior  finally takes the stand.

Ecofriendly ingredients can spice up your skin care at very little expense

Take a peek in your refrigerator and evaluate its contents. Chances are, you have a variety of healthy foods that can be incorporated into your  skin care regimen. Now is the perfect time to rediscover the multi-purpose benefits of common everyday foods that have great potential to nourish our bodies and our skin.

Take a look at ingredients found in your kitchen, at your local grocery store or the farmer’s market. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products and natural oils and fats have been used in skin care, hygiene and anti-aging for thousands of years, dating back to the Egyptians.

Renowned for its antibacterial properties, honey is considered to be one of the best natural acne fighting ingredients.Honey Photo

Normal/combination

Since normal/combination skin types generally do not have specific problems to address, anti-aging treatments and gentle exfoliation to increase circulation work best.
• Strawberries can be used to condition and tone any skin type. They help lighten pigmentation problems and keep skin smooth and supple.
Tip: Mash strawberries and use as an astringent or face cleansing mask.
• Cocoa. The antioxidant powers of the distinctive bean promote healthy skin. Research shows that when cocoa is applied topically it helps to reduce skin irritation and combat cellular damage.
Tip: For a soothing mask, mix cocoa powder with a little water or buttermilk—an excellent source of lactic acid that stimulates the cocoa’s antioxidant function and softens skin.

Oily/acne prone

Oily and acne prone skin is frequently irritated by harsh cleansers, acids and anti-acne products. Give your  skin a break with gentle remedies that treat acne and keep oil at bay.
• Carrots. The carrot is probably best known for containing vitamin A, which has proved to be as effective in dealing with acne as some compounds such as retinoids.
Tip: Carrots make an excellent skin mask for acne and blemishes.
Apply raw, grated carrots to the face. Add lemon juice if you like. To make a cooked carrot mask, boil three large carrots and mash them or blend in a food processor. Add five tablespoons of honey or yogurt (optional). Apply gently, in an upward motion. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
• Honey. Renowned for its antibacterial properties, honeyHoney Photo is considered to be one of the best natural acne fighting ingredients. Why? Because honey actually kills the bacteria that cause acne.
Tip 1: Massage a small amount of slightly heated honey into the skin.
Tip 2: Dab honey on individual pimples to help clear up blemishes.
• Egg whites. Although egg whites alone have no real long-term benefits, they are great for shrinking pores and treating blackheads and whiteheads.
Tip: Egg whites are best applied with a flat brush on clean skin. After the mask has dried, your client will look like a prune—but this lets you know that it is working. The mask can be quickly removed with a wet washcloth.

Dry

Sun damage is usually the culprit behind dry and cracked skin. Other factors include diet, environment and insufficient water intake. (Note that acne is usually the result of dry skin.) Create a facial that not only moisturizes, but helps the skin retain the treatment’s benefits.
• Avocados. Packed with monounsaturated fats and vitamins B and E, avocados are excellent for moisturizing and rejuvenating dry skin. They are also rich in vitamin C, which can stimulate collagen and reduce visible signs of aging.
Tip: Mash one tablespoon of ripe avocado, add half a teaspoon of honey and mix. Stir in a small amount of almond meal until creamy. Apply to clean skin, leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. Finish with a rinse of vinegar pH balancer.
• Bananas. High in potassium and possessing the same benefits as the avocado, the banana is often a preferred treatment for dry skin. The long lasting moisturizing effects give the skin a healthy glow. The treatment can also be penetrated into the skin with the use of galvanic or ultra-sound machines.
Tip: Mash the banana and add two teaspoons of yogurt. Mix until creamy and apply immediately to the skin. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove with a spatula and then rinse.

Olive oil can be used on the face daily. With continued use, olive oil can also reduce hyperpigmentation.

Olive oil photo
For all skin types

• Olive oil. The Egyptians, Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans all took full advantage of the benefits of topical oil application. Today, when we observe the beautiful skin of Mediterranean women, many identify olive oil as the main ingredient behind their complexion. Sofia Loren is an olive oil devotee, having used it as part of her skin care regimen for most of her life.
Olive oil comes in several grades—extra virgin is the least processed. The cell size of olive oil is smaller than the blood cell, and extra-virgin olive oil has all of the antioxidants the body needs in direct proportion to the body’s requirements.
Tip: Olive oil can be used on the face daily. With continued use, olive oil can also reduce hyperpigmentation.

• Green tea. The plentiful antioxidants in green tea help fight free radical damage. When applied topically, tea reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles and can even help prevent skin cancer and signs of aging resulting from sun damage.
Tip: Brew strong tea (one or two tea bags for each cup of water), let cool and apply to the face after cleansing.

Rock Salt

• Salt and sugar. When used as natural exfoliating particles, sugar and salt help loosen lifeless epidermal cells that need to be physically removed. The glycolic acid in sugar and its rough texture makes it ideal for exfoliation to give skin a healthy glow.
Tip: For a cost effective scrub, mix a teaspoon of sugar or salt with any cleanser and apply in small, circular motions.

Super foods for the skin

HerbsIt is true that we are what we eat. While the topical application of fruits, veggies and natural oils will help improve the skin’s appearance, ingesting these same foods is important as well. A great complexion can be achieved from a healthy diet and taking the right supplements and vitamins. It is also important to drink enough water to keep the skin hydrated each day to avoid dehydration—which affects cellular metabolism—and to help flush out the toxins in the body, which results in clear skin.

Experts recommend a diet high in fiber and low in fat. Countless scientific studies have shown that antioxidants and foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids help clear skin and slow the aging process. Antioxidants decrease cell destruction by neutralizing free radicals that can cause damage, and omega 3 fatty acids help reduce skin inflammation and improve circulation. Some super foods that are widely touted for their benefits to the skin include salmon, sardines, nuts, seeds (pumpkin and sunflower), flaxseed and olive oils, blueberries, pomegranate, broccoli, oats, spinach, dark chocolate, wheatgrass, red wine, green or black tea and tomatoes.

Using these kitchen remedies  is good for the skin, better for the environment and easy to add to your existing treatments. Not only can you save money by using low-cost ingredients (when bought in season), but you can learn at home treatments to enjoy between facial appointments to save both money and your skin!

Note: Always take into consideration any food allergies.

Healthy Beautiful Skin, A sunblock away!

Fashion and beauty insiders agree: this summer is all about glowing, healthy skin. Actually for me it's been that way since I noticed I was starting to get brown large patches on my cheeks over 30 years go.

Tanning is no longer the "in thing" it looks awful unless you are a teenager with gorgeous skin, and then, wait tillyour 30's. You will definitely start to see the aging of your skin little by little, it creeps up on you especially if you are light skinned.

Survey results have shown that the appeal of tanned skin is less popular --63 percent say they are not more attracted to someone who is tan and 53 percent of people surveyed believe they don't look better with a tan.
I know I definitely don't!  It makes me look older and haggered.

"The skin color you were born with is always going to be the right one for you. Be yourself. For a pale girl to acquire a deep tan is bizarre," says Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys and the author of Eccentric Glamour: Creating an Insanely More Fabulous You. "Whatever color your skin, you should emphasize your God-given gorgeousness; don't try to deny it."

Below, you'll find a step-by-step guide to achieving the must have accessory of the season -- healthy, natural looking skin. Thank you for your time and consideration.

GLOW-HOW
A Step by Step Guide to Achieving the Must-Have Accessory of the Season
 Healthy, Natural-Looking Skin

"Beauty begins with healthy, glowing skin," says Bobbi Brown. "No matter what your age, protect yourself daily from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, which not only wrinkle and dull the skin, but increase your risk for skin cancer. It's the best beauty advice I have for keeping your skin looking smooth, luminous and radiant."

To communicate that tanning is finally out the style, The Skin Cancer Foundation launched a public awareness campaign entitled Go With Your Own Glow. Developed to encourage women to love - and protect - their skin, whatever its natural hue, the campaign is relying not just on health and safety information, but also on fashion - promoting healthy, luminous skin as the new beauty ideal. To learn more, visit http://www.skincancer.org/Go-With-Your-Own-Glow.html.

How to Go With Your Own Glow

1. First, determine your natural skin tone/shade by looking at skin that hasn't been exposed to the sun, such as underneath the breasts, on the inside of your arm, or your buttocks.

2. Once your natural skin tone is determined, the goal is to choose a color somewhere in between your sun-exposed and non-exposed skin. Let your skin fade over time to your natural color, using the non-exposed skin as a baseline to determine your skin color goal. You want to have an even, natural skin tone. You can do this by seeking the shade between 10AM - 4PM, applying sunscreen on a daily basis. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and avoiding tanning salons.

3. Take care of sunspots - products that contain a combination of hydroquinone, Retin-A and a mild steroid cream can be very useful for stubborn brown spots and blotchy brown discoloration. There are also excellent treatments your dermatologist can perform to help erase the discoloration and help create a smooth, even skin tone.

4. Makeup - To add some color to the face, apply blushes, highlighters or bronzers to the apples of the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose and chin. The idea is to have definition, not to look like you're wearing a lot of makeup.

"Glowing skin is about natural beauty, says Doris Day, MD, educational spokesperson for The Skin Cancer Foundation "Not only does healthy, protected skin help prevent premature aging, but it also greatly reduces the risk of skin cancer."

Daily Routine for Glowing Skin

Proper cleansing, morning and night, is a must for glowing skin. Your cleanser doesn't have to lather or foam to work: Many cleansing cloths, for instance, don't lather, but these products take all the effort out of washing your face.

In the morning, if you use a vitamin C serum, put it on after cleansing your skin. Then apply a sunscreen with a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, followed by makeup.

If you exfoliate, do it after cleansing in the evening. Then, if your skin can tolerate it, apply a prescription or over-the-counter retinol (topical vitamin A, used to treat signs of aging) with your moisturizer or night cream. Because retinol and other vitamin A skin treatments are sensitive to the sun, use these products only at night. They also make your skin more sensitive so consider a higher SPF sunscreen Click here: BridalGal | Sun Protection Products  during the day and stop using them a few days prior to a face treatment such as laser, facial or waxing.

Remember, a little bit goes a long way for both serums and retinol, so you don't have to apply a lot. Also, many products containing beneficial topical antioxidants are available in a broad price range, so going with your own glow doesn't have to cost a fortune.

Self tanners, makeup, proper cleansing and exfoliation, and various topical lotions, creams, serums, and gels all provide easy and effective ways to enhance your natural glow and protect your skin.

If the health benefits aren't enough to convince you, consider the aesthetic value. "Tanned skin lookes aged, wrinkled and dehidrated.  It acentuates lines, and the older you get, the worse it looks.  Think of Alligator skin! Ring a bell?  Sun block and sunscreen a must for glowing gorgeous skin!  Click here: BridalGal | Sun Protection Products
